I have a 727 converter out of my small block will this work in a 727 big block and does the amount of splines matter ?

Yes, the splines have to match, but there's more to look at. Even big block to big block can vary, depending on the type of crank and the balance weights on the converter.

727 converter splines are the same form small block to big block. Balancing of converter would be based on engine application.

It's true that small block and big block were the same but you still should count the splines. Up to 1966 they had only 19 splines. After that they had 24 splines. Until lock-up converters appeared in 1978 and they went to 23 splines - but certain applications that didn't lock up still retained the earlier 24 spline input.

So just grabbing a converter doesn't always work, spline counting isn't a bad idea.
