Hello all, A few months ago I replaced the transmission cooling lines and the filter (and gasket) on my 727 tf transmission. After I did so the transmission didn't shift so well at first though it seemed okay after a few drives. The car (66 Satellite) has been put away for the winter though I start it occasionally. I did so today and also put it in gear to see how it was. Before I changed the filter and lines, the transmission when put in drive or reverse, would not engage right away. I could press on the acccelerator and the car wouldn't move at first. Once it got a little warmed up it would. I always thought my brakes were sticking so I stopped using my parking brake but it still did the same thing. That is why I changed the filter (I did the lines just because). Anyway, when I put the car in gear today it moved forward, and it moved back when put in reverse. I thought all was fine. But, I put it in Park and got out of the car just to take a look at nothing in particular, and the car started to roll forward. Not fast or anything but it shouldn't have been moving at all. So I got back in, left it in park and pressed on the gas a little, and it moved forward. I put it in neutral and pressed the gas, and again it moved forward. Any ideas what's going on here? Did I screw something up when I changed the filter? Or is there another issue that needs to be addressed? Thanks for you help in advance!

I would think that the parking pawl is not engaging when in park and possibly the shift points at the tranny are off quite a bit. I would check the engagement of the parking pawl first especially if your car uses two cables to control the transmission's actions. If not, I'd be checking to see if the shifter post of the transmission is in the right position for park engagement. Unfortunately you will probably have to remove the pan to see if the linkage is pushing the rooster plate completely into the detents for the selected positions. You can disconnect the linkage at the tranny and do this by hand but for safety reasons it's best to have an assistant present to maintain braking. You should feel clean crisp shift action for all gears selected at the lever and when it's in PARK you should not be able to roll the car. You may also have a filthy shifter body but that wouldn't explain the PARK engagement issue. If the car is push button shift, that's a totally different adjustment and it would be best to refer to the manual. There's a bit of information missing here to really diagnose the problem - column or floor shift, push button shifter, 2 cable tranny etc.

After sitting for a while the torq can drain back into the trans...after you start it put it into N and let it idle and fill the torq.

I would check to make sure shift linkage is adjusted priperly before doing anything else.

My question is when you say you step on the gas and it moved forward in park did it move like it was in drive and had power to the rear wheels or did it just drift and was neutral the same just drifting or actually like being in drive ? If it moves like under power then it could have an internal trans problem like welded clutches in the rear clutch pack. If it basically just drifts then I would say its a linkage adjustment problem and or the parking pawl is not engaging. Ron

If you only changed the filter and nothing else the only possibility of mistake would be fluid level. Now if it rolls in park unless the pawl is jammed or broken (I've only ever see one break in 30 years of trans work) the linkage is not putting it in park. Either out of adjustment (but how if it wasn't touched?) or possibly it broke a bushing and got sloppy? Broken bracket? The moving forward could be welded clutches but when you factor in no park as well I doubt it. No need to pull than pan. Remove the linkage at the trans. Have a helper shift the lever as you move the trans lever one click at a time. The linkage should "fall back" into the hole in each gear selection. If not look and see what has moved.
