At idle in what position should the throttle lever be? I adjusted my kickdown linkage per the service manual but still seem to be having shifting issues. Without linkage hooked up If I start to move the lever to the rear I start to feel resistance when it is about 90 degrees to the transmission. The service manual says to adjust the linkage with this lever all the way forward. However knowing that it travels a bit before I feel resistance, should i adjust linkage to the position to where i start to feel resistance

The picture below shows the position of the throttle lever when I begin to feel resistance. I can still pull it forward about another 3/4".

A lot of people, myself included, adjust it at full throttle. Hold the throttle open all the way, and adjust the lever all the way back. It is a good starting point, but you may have to tweak it slightly to get what you want. There could also be other issues with your trans.

What R/T Boy said - you should also check to make sure your carb is opening to full throttle making this adjustment. Allow about and 8th to 1/4" of remaining travel on the trans rod, don't set it where it's locked the lever back...

The lever should be all the way forward at idle, the spring on the linkage pulls it there. Yes it has no resistance for the first part of the travel with the engine off.

Don't worry about the slack in the first part of the throttle lever.
Adjust the trans lever to be all the way back at full throttle. If the engine revs to high between shifts, add a little slack in the cable to where the throttle is "almost" all the way back at full throttle.
The "slack" in the closed throttle position is that the internal throttle valve adjustment is setting a minimum pressure so you don't upshift at very low speeds, likr shifting into third gear at 10 MPH.

Do y'all know if there is a difference between a transmission throttle lever for a two barrel vs four barrel linkage? I think at some point I ran into some posts stating that but cannot remember.

The lever on the trans is the same. The slotted rod at the carb end of the three piece linkage would be shorter on a two barrel.
