Need a little advice as to the best way to fill this joint between the back window and the rear window? Car was originally a vinyl top which was removed for a botched paint job attempt by an old neighbor years ago.

My son and I are looking to fix the car up and get it looking presentable so he can start driving it after he gets license this summer.

Both sides were cracked with the caked on body filler, seems to be a large and deep enough area to weld a small filler plate rather than fill with body filler.

What at is the best method to repair this area properly? Thanks in advance. image.jpgimage.jpg

Get more area to start with or your body work will just crack and fall out give yourself about a 6-8" on ether side then all the way front to back then get the bare metal cleaned and primer sealer then scuff and use what ever body filler your comfortable with I'd use duraglass but bondo is deff easiest to use and is perfectly fine to use fill it sand it smooth 're do as needed till perfect then simply prime over filler and paint

Is that the joint where the roof meets the quarter panel? If so, having a vinyl roof meant that it was probably originally filled with plastic filler. Not bondo, but a filler that would have been heat activated and hardened in the baking oven.

If the roof would have been painted, lead would have been used to do the filling.

Search on here and find Bladecutter's filler thread to learn how to make a superior epoxy based filler that won't let you down.

Yes, exactly the area pictured. I will look up the thread you mentioned and give the epoxy a shot, thanks for the advice.

How thick is the filler? If you can't pull the metal out close to flush I have had great luck with AllMetal filler. It is a bit pricy but it works and actually sands like lead.

Sand a large space on each side of the weld.
Sand grind all rust off. Try to leave metal ruff for bondo to stick to.
I used all metal to fill right over bear metal.
Followed by premium bondo , followed by 2 part glaze.
I used a large sanding block to match the form.
