Quick question i have a 741 pumpkin is this worth keeping or do i buy a 742 or 489, reason i ask is i have stock 383 but has a highway gear and im wanting to run a 3.73 or 3.91 to spruce it up a bit, dont wanna waste my money if the 741 is a waste of time. Its in a 64 Plymouth Sport Fury, car runs great and sounds good, but turning the tires over is not happening with the gear i have.

Change the gears and you'll be fine, but the higher hp would be better suited for the 742 or 489 case.

Who here has ever broke a 741? The weak point is the size of the pinion thread where the yoke bolts on and it's the same size as all the other 8 3/4's iirc. The biggest draw back to the 41 is the availability of gear ratios. I've always kept the 41's for myself and sold off the others since they bring more money and I beat the crap out of my cars....

Can any one direct me in the right direction where to buy gears for a 7.41?

Randy's Ring and Pinion and Richmond Gear I think both sell ratios for the 741. I beat on a 741 case for years with my 340 Swinger and never had a problem with it. IT had 391's in it. Used to drag race it .

I ran 10.0 with a 4.30 geared 741 case with a 1.41 60 ft for about 4 years all season long.
But I'm sure someone here has built something much faster and have probably broken several in a row. LOL

A buddy and I broke several 8 3/4's rears but we were running a 10.60 car with a 4 speed but what we broke was the ring gear. Shaved the teeth off of several before finally going with a Dana 60

You can do a Google search on gears and several hits will show up.
