8 3/4 axle end play

Just put a 3.55 posi in my 66 satellite but am having problems in getting the correct axle end play. The adjuster has to be turned in almost all the way to even come close. Is this a problem or do you think I am ok?

If your sure grip uses the buttons...were they in place?

Book says .013 to .023" IIRC but I like to stay on the tight side. Axles will grow as they heat up. If you stay in town and don't do much highway driving for long periods, you can get by with even less. What type SureGrip did you install? The cone type will have a trapped thrust spacer and the clutch type has a smaller pin with buttons and it's common for it to be broken and gone from the axles being over tightened. '66Sat--did you remember to tap on the left axle a couple times with a hammer to seat that side? Maybe it's a little bit of wear from the years? Jeez, how many yrs. old are these things?

Assuming you have the buttons in place and all other parts accounted for, I find the non adjuster side needs to be completely tight and the adjuster side tight to the point that it's hard to move the adjuster nut. Or make the adjustment then check it. If it's wrong then loosen the flange, make an adjustment then tighten it again and check the result. Also make sure the bearings are packed with grease! Those are not lubed with gear oil.
