I'm about ready to begin assembling my rear axle and I'm still a bit confused over which gaskets go where at the wheel bearings. I suspect the gaskets that were in it when I took it apart were not completely correct.

I found the foam gaskets. I assume they go between the brake backing plate and the axle bearing retainer flange. Is this correct?

I haven't found a gasket for between the housing end and the brake backing plate. I've read it is metal with a rubber coating or bead. I have some gasket material (probably 1/32 inch thick I think. Any reason I can't just cut some gaskets out of that for this position?

Thanks

First the metal gasket then the backingplate then the foamgasket and the axles.

Don't recommend trying paper gaskets at the ends of the housing.

Why? Metal gaskets are only going the 'crush' a given amount, then stay there. The foam gaskets have no effect. Once it's all assembled...where those metal gaskets come into play, because then it's time to adjust the axle end play. That's critical! Once set, it needs to keep that end play. Paper gaskets would allow the measurement to move.

OK - good point especially with .008 inch end play. Does anyone know of a source who has the metal gaskets? They were apparently missing in action on my car. Anyone found these at a NAPA, O'Riellys or Auto Zone lately?
