Hi guys may seem like a sillly question but it has me stumped
i have a 68 charger 440 with A-883 and 8 3/4 rear,
when the car is on the ground in gear it wont roll which is normal but when i jack both wheels off the ground i can spin both wheels and whichever way i spin them the opposite one spins the opposite way, is this normal or do i need to do some maintenance on the diff (oh also when it is off the ground and i am spinning the wheels the tailshaft doesnt spin only the wheels some sort of clutch i am guessing in the diff

sorry i do not know alot about the 8 3/4 diff.

That just means you have a standard open rear end (non sure grip) not postive.
http://www.car-videos.net/whatis/differential.asp

An open differential allows for some slippage to occur between the two sides of the axle so that the tires do not rub the ground. With both tires left off the ground, put the transmission in neutral and with your hand turn one of the wheels. The other wheel should spin in the opposite direction with an open differential. If the opposite wheel does not spin, the differential may be damaged

re diff

thanks for that speedy response thats good to know that nothings damaged so in other words if i get the wheels spinning only one will spin?
also is it easy to put a sure grip or locker sort of setup in the diff?

Oh also one more question the other day i went for a quick spin and half way down the road the motor stalled as it was sitting for a while and while i was rolling i tried doing a clutchy to get it started but when i dropped the clutch while it was in 2nd gear the car just kept rolling is this normal or would you say the clutch is stuffed?

Roger that......Hit the gas-One Wheel Peel. It's not too hard to swap out, but you need to know what you are doing. No offense here, but judging by what you know about the 8 3/4, I would recommend you take it to a professional if you go that route.

That's curious. The clutch was good enough to get you going from a stand still so it's can't be that bad.
