I have a gear set that has a little rust on the teeth. Is there a certain way to clean them to prevent damage?

Best way I know, soak them in Evapo-Rust, will remove the rust with out scrubbing, and will not hurt the metal. Its best if you have de-greased them first, but the stuff does have detergents in it as well. I would do this, unless the rust is deep enough to cause pitting, then I would just get new gears.

I wire wheeled my 3.55 15 years ago to remove the rust. 100+ passes with slicks and a 4 speed (mid 12) still going.

good to know. I soaked them in apple cider vinegar, came off with a tooth brush.

I've bead blasted gears with rust on them, run just fine and quiet too!
