will the carrier out of a 489 case work in a 741 case. I have carrier from a pu and would like to put it in my 741 case in my 66 if at all possible

Do you mean the entire 489 carrier in place of your 741 in the axle housing? If so yes (yoke being the same is the main consideration)

or

Do you mean just the rotating assembly? If so yes with the matching bearings & cups... but remember the ring is matched to the pinion so remove the ring from the 741 rotating assembly and put it on the 489 rotating assembly.

Additional: make sure the thrust bearing is in the 489 rotating assembly if you have one in the 741 rotating assembly... or NOT if your running greens

Use the entire 489 center section because it is stronger than the 741 and it is easier and less expensive to just swap the centers.
