Can you set the gears in the center section outside the car? Can I just take it out and give it to a shop then put it back in when they set them?

Yes you can.

Yes it,s easy to do...Just pull the axles,pull the third member and take it to your local shop...I did this a couple years ago with a 3.55 gears...Now i,m gonna do it again...Unless I can find a 742 empty case..

yea have them set the gears and you can just slip it in.
