I have a question about the axle gaskets on the 8.75 rears. Looking at a diagram...

It looks like there is a gasket between the retainer and the housing, but it shows a second gasket between the bearing cup and the oil seal, but those would fit inside the hole of the gasket, which to me means you would just end up with two gaskets between the retainer and the housing. So what's the point of the second gasket???

What they don't show are the brake backing plates. There is a metal/rubber gasket between the axle tube and backing plate, then there is a foam seal (or another metal/rubber seal) between the backing plate and retainer.

Some guys do not use a sealant of the metal gaskets. There not bathing in oil, so there is no real need for sealant. Same with the foam. No sealant needed.

The metal gaskets come with the rubber coating already on it.

The metal seals I've used have a raised ridge, that crushes down when tightened, to make the seal.

Ah... that makes sense. Thanks!

Does anyone have a source for the metal/rubber gaskets? Found the foam ones but not the ones next to the axle housing flange.

Detroit Muscle Technologies has both the metal and foam as kit. 10 bucks for 2 foam and 2 metal. Good people to deal with and carry everything needed in paint gasket kits, fire wall gaskets, heater gaskets, kick panel insulation, etc.

last time I switch a center chunk napa had all the gaskets and seals.
