The 833 is a piece of work... it'll easily handle 500-525hp... my friend ran one behind a blown 440 with 18" wide mickey thompson tires.... never had a problem.
I dunno about over 500hp....depends on how you use it. We used them in the early 80's running Super Street (10.90 index) and used about 2 per season. If you dead hook 500+hp, that's abusing it pretty good imo. If you want, do the math. Look up a calculator and see what it takes to go 126 mph in the 1/4 with a 3300 lb car.....that's what we were running but we were launching at 6k too!
I never heard of "rock crusher" with the 833, They have been called Chrysler's bullet proof 4-speed.. And i agree, they are a tough well built trans, but i have to agree with Cranky thats a lot of HP throwing at one.
I Stand Corrected...My 1968 Charger Came With A 4-Speed In It And The Dealer That I Bought It From Said The Tranny Was An 833 Commonly Called A "Rock Crusher." And This Was A Dodge Dealer. Shows What I Know!
This is the first time that I heard of an 833 referred to as a rock crusher too. Was it a salesman or the dealer himself? I've ran across many sales slobs that had no idea of the product they were selling....and some dealership owners that didn't really know jack crap either!
