Ok guys I have just purchased a 833 transmission for my 383 magnum which I will soon be putting in my 71 roadrunner. The tranny came with Lakewood scatter shield bellhouse and a hurst shifter my father and I are going to do a full rebuild on it. Hes never really worked with any 833s before and we need all the help we can get i will be posting any problems or questions that come along the way. Ill have some pics up in the morning.

First issue the shifter is a hurst super shifter its got this weird little handle beside it. were going to swap it for a 4 speed but for now we want to get it working but it seems to be broken anyone familiar with this type of shifter?

It's possible the little handle operates the reverse gate.

Don't make the mistake I made years ago and take it apart just to look inside.Get a manual, most any will do with a transmission section. There are some measurements you'll want to take as you disassemble which will help in deciding what parts are really needed.I have found Brewer's Performance a good company to deal with.Good luck and good shifting.

That's what we were thinking but it seems kinda odd still something seems wrong about it more then likely were just gonna switch handles to a pistol grip.
I've just pulled up some guides from hurst on rebuilds and i think im gonna buy the kit soon.

two observations, and I guess I replied to an earlier post. It's a 23 spliner.
If you are putting it into a 71 B, you will want to change the extention housing to allow for a stock shifter, ie dual mount.
Also the 3rd gear has two nasty looking rust spots. means tranny sat with moisture in it. look for more damage. you dont want any pitted surface on gear. one cant really see the synchro teeth to make an opinion on them.

It's been a while since I've seen these but if memory serves it's a reverse lockout. Try moving it up and down.

yeah it moves up and down we figured that's what it was, but this shifter just doesn't seem right i think its pretty rusted out anyway so were going to replace it soon long with the front retainer cause its broken, start the rebuild process then get ready for installation.

Yes it should, in fact I might have the march 04 issue in my garage lol.
