Does anyone know of a good Oldsmobile site??

I have post the below info one one site and attenpted to on another with no luck

Thanks to all in advance for any help you can offer.

New here. I am not an Olds guy.

I inherited an 87 Cutlass with V8. It is pretty much all original with 76K miles. From what my mechanic tells me this car has some kind of odd carb that was a one year only attempt to transition to fuel injection. He said that he went online to research it and they gave him some kind of jury rig fix which he performed. He said the correct thing to do was to replace the carb with an older type and new it is around $600. The problem now is that if the car sits over night you have to pump the accelerator about 50 times before you attempt to crank it and even then if it flutters and if it doesn't catch quickly you have to go back to pumping before cranking again.

Is there a simple fix for this or do I need to find a carb? I don't want to spend a lot of money on this old car. Are used carbs for this application readily available and not generally needing a rebuild for a reasonable price?
I don't want to get into changing intake manifolds either. Just looking for the simpliest fix.

A V8 in that year, if it looks like an Olds engine, would be a 307 I believe. Otherwise it wouldn't surprise me if it had a SBC in it. I'm thinking you have a feedback carb that is based on a Q jet and I don't recall many good things about them. This is basically one of the the first computer control systems called the "three C" or Computer Command Control I believe. If you are not familiar with their operation it's basically a solenoid attached to the metering rod hanger that is constantly cycling like a fuel injector. You can hear rapid clicking if you stand over the carb. The sol lifts the metering rods in and out of the primary main jets and the frequency is what sets the average mixture. There should be an O2 sensor involved as well. Search CCC and see (bad pun) if you find anything that way.

Some kind of funky fix eh.......Hmmmm. How about just pull it apart and rebuild it? Don't know the funky carb you're speaking of but did anyone check the accelerator pump? Metering rods? Gaskets? They should be easy enough to get from a local parts store. Why not check out the easy things first and try rebuilding before tossing it in the garbage can? Can you manually bybass that solenoid that Meep-Meep spoke of, set the rods to W.O.T. and see if she fires over?

If not, and it actually does need a replacement carb for some strange reason, 600 bucks is out of the park. Go to the local junkyard, grab a early to mid 80's' pontiac, chev or whatever carb off a 305 or 350 for 10-20 bucks, have it boiled, pay the $19.99 for the Quadrajunk rebuild kit and toss it together.

just my 2 cents......

Thanks for the info guys.

The classic Olds web sit is the one I have been having trouble registering on. I think maybe the administrator is on vacation and I have not been cleared to post yet.

From the hottroders website listed above:
"That IS an electronic feedback carb. Its hooked to the vehicles computer and is NOT easy to work on and can be screwed up quite easily. The yellow plastic piece on the drivers side front is the throttle position sensor. The blue plug goes to the solonoid that activates the primary metering rods. 9 times out of 10, when attempting to remove the carb top to service it, the button on the top of the TPS gets broken. May be a hard piece to find now days. Got the same carb on my 86 Caprice. So far, I haven't had to open it up. My suggestion is get professional help and DO NOT let anyone talk you into a rebuilt carb. If they cannot fix yours, take it somewhere else! Not too many mechanics are comfortable with the CCC Qjet carb."

This is the carb this car has. My mechanic on this said the button on the top of the TPS was broken and not available. He found something on the net that was the jury rig and did it but said it still wasn't right.

As said, I am not an Olds guy and I thought the engine was a 350 not a 307 because it has a 4 barrel but the factory tag on the rad. shows it to be a 5.0 which would be a 307. I didn't think they ever put a 4 barrel on a 307 but apparently I was wrong.

I am going to check on a 1986 replacement carb for it.

Wow.......Who would have thought a cheapo carb from the 80's would raise such a stink. I guess looking back, cars from that era were a disaster under the hood.

I had a 86' Trans Am with a 305 and a 4BBL and my father had a 86' Silverado with a 305and a 4BBL. Shouldn't be too tough for you to find one floating around

My buddies 82 olds 307 has a 4 barrel. still lots of problems. I say ditch the car and find a mopar driver.

I always thought the carb and coal-burning computer on my 85 Ramcharger were archaic, but chalked it up to general Dodge weirdness. That and the fact that it was a truck. Isn't 87 also about the same time that Olds was experimenting with self immolating diesels made from low compression blocks?

Here is another site. They deal specifically with 78-87 GM G-Bodies.

There are some good people on there that are really knowledgeable.
Ther are a lot of people that want to put 24 inch wheels on the cars to make it look 'cool' and are totally clueless about anything mechanical.

This is not a carburetor but a curse. The Devil lives in that thing :DMAGE:

LOL....no doubt. The amazing thing is there is more than one person that thought they all had a great idea when coming out with this monstrosity in 87'.
