Hi all,
I live in New Zealand. If I was interested in buying a car in USA and I had the number plate or Vin number is there a web site that you can use to check the cars history. 60's and 70's American cars.

Thanks
Tony

None that I’m aware of. Not sure when services like Car Fax started but never saw any reports on cars older than late 80’s.

Internet searches are about the only thing you can try. That would only help if the car has been passed around.

No not really.....the best resource is if you can find any past documentation....and then track down from there.......

You can try reaching out to previous owners if you have a lead, otherwise if you know the state where the car is or was registered you can try to contact the DMV for information. You used to be able to do that kind of search but things have changed since I did it.... good luck

Not much you can do, even if they have anything, most DMV's aren't allowed to release any information due to privacy laws. If theres original documentation, you can try to track down the previous owners via facebook, whitepages, and obituaries.

The hunt for previous owner of my roadrunner dead ended when the dmv couldn't tell me anything (they dump any info they have ten years after the car is last registered/heard from), and when id found out that the owner of the wrecking yard mine came from in the 80's had died. I was able to find someone who'd seen it in the wrecking yard though, I posted some pictures of the unrestored car on a facebook group in the area that the car came from. Someone remembered it and knew it pretty well from seeing it in the junk yard in the 80's.

Cheers guys, brilliant replies . my question has been answered and I can now move on with my search.
Thanks
Tony
