.many sites say place stick hard into 3rd run bolt down until it contacts stop back out 1 turn tighten jam nut repeat same for 4th gear. seems like that would be hard on trans seeing how trans is becoming the stop instead of the shifter. anyone experiencing trans problems doing this? i'm running an A833 18 spline dated 1968 in a 69 charger 440 with a hurst competition plus shifter.

Hurst non-comp plus shifters do not have stops. Have not had any problems due to not having stops. The procedure you have posted sound reasonable.

I've always put the shifter 'hard' into gear and then run the bolts in with my fingers until I could feel it hit the lever and then tightened the jam nut. Works for me...

kind of disappointed I only got 1 response on this issue that actually pertains to my question. and Colorado dave I appreciate the input. there has to be others with the same question and answers as well.

I do it the same as Dave!!

Adjust shifter stop bolts. Back both bolts out of shifter frame
until only a few threads remain engaged. Push stick firmly into
3rd gear and hold. Screw 3rd gear stop bolt in until contact is
felt. Back bolt out one turn and tighten locknut. Pull stick firmly
back into 4th gear, screw 4th gear stop bolt in until contact is
made, then back stop bolt out one turn and tighten locknut

However, I've never done it like that but more like Dave posted but with a 1/4 turn out for drag race use and then test drive it. For street use, it's exactly like Dave's method. Also I get rid of the nylon bushings and replace them with solids and for drag race only, a Vertigate goes in.
