So guys I know you answer this a thousand times a year, please humor me. My 1970, 440 Roadrunner has a 22" Radiator. I just upgraded to ECP 2 ROW 1" tube Aluminum, FloKooler pump, Miloden full flow 185 stat and new shroud w/stock fan and new fanclutch assembly. The engine has no miles just break in miles (under 100) stock to mild rebuild. stock heads, 30 over, mild cam, dual quads, headers, normal compression. Timing is at 7 deg. . While at idle the car heats up to about 195 to 200. Gauges are all rebuilt and calibrated. This is after idling for about 40 minutes on a 75 degree day. I would like to get this down but don't want to add a pusher. Do u think going to a mechanical fan would help? Or any suggestions
Thanx in advance

195-200 isn't bad... hot days driving in traffic mine gets up to 210-220

The stat temp is when it opens. 195 is normal, actually the stats from the factory were 195. I don't see a problem.

1st time around for me with MOPAR. What is an acceptable temp.. My fear is traffic on a 90 degree day

have you tried a more inital timing? Is your fan blades half in half out of the fan shroud, if you have them in to far you will create an air dam between the rad and the fan which will not alow air flow?

Timing was set at 0 (+/-2) which is what my book called for, advanced to 7 (trying to get through inspection). The fan and shroud are all original, not much to play with. I'll check. I have March underdrive pulleys, Maybe turning the fan to slow?

it could be your pulleys causing your problems, if your fan is not turn fast enough to pull air through the rad to cool your engine while at idle

What plugs are you running, and are you running Lean ?

Get a laser temperature gun if it gets hotter, these motors love to run hot.

OK, I'm running Accel 437S plug (for no particular reason) if u know better please share. Yes I am trying to run lean or as lean as I can to get through inspection with these dual quads. I know this will heat it up. My fan blades are totally in shroud with about a finger width to core. I don't how hot is to hot, not to sound to Mopar stupid

well running lean is gonna make you run Hotter, plus if your running a Hot Plug That Too will make you run Hot, you need to check the Heat range on you plug and possibly run a cooler plug. also sounds to me like your fan is to close to the radiator, your fan blades should only be Half way in the shroud

That makes sense, sounds like I'll be going to a mechanical fan with a short extension. Which really doesn't hurt my feelings. Really don't know what heat range to run on these plugs. Or for that matter which one to use. I've been playing with this for awhile, 3rd set and still not happy. Think I need to change brands to.

I wouldn't sweat anything under 200, I start worrying when it hits 210 and continues to climb. Unfortunately that's the biggest downfall of mechanical fans, they move the least air when you need it most.

I was just curious why you mention inspections ? We are exempt for these on classic cars as we all know they would never pass today's standards .
Running an engine lean will also make them run hot - believe it or not fuel also acts as a coolant .
Lean engines are also at risk of valve burn .
Add more fuel bump the timing to 8

Like I said in post #5 you need your fan blades half in half out of the fan shroud, if you have them in to far you will create an air dam between the rad and the fan which will not alow air flow?

Thanks for the input guys, unfortunately I live in a state where they stick a sniffer in the tailpipe for emissions, u get 3 tries to pass 70 emissions standards then look for a repair note for money spent.(Delaware) That's why I'm running lean and low timing temporarily. Before I go to the mechanical fan I'll fix the fan/shroud and drop to a cooler plug.
Thanx

Wow didn't Know that about your state, (Delaware) well this is just me i'd put a 1 barrel Carb just to pass then i'd change it back to what ever you wanted,

Not sure how any of our cars would pass with the new fuels today they would also cause higher temperatures with no lead not sure about the off gas though.
I'd be curious to see your evaluation posted after your tested please .

So I picked up a set of Autolite AP85 plugs, couldn't get the heat range of them but looked at a prior listed thread concerning plugs, guys seem to like them. Surprised me about Delaware to. Oh well, another MOPAR will hopefully be on the road this summer.

A flex fan will move more air than a stock one.
Not sure if i picked up this tip here or from For c Bodies. Under your thermostat in the cast water pump housing is a 1/2" hole. I drilled and tapped mine and installed an oil passage plug (Allen head pipe plug from a big block)with a 1/8" hole drilled in it. Seemed to help a lot. Another thing is if you have your heater core bypassed it will recirc a lot of coolant that should be going to your radiator or heater. Try installing a valve in that line to reduce the flow to the heater. If you don't have the heater hooked up, close the valve completely.
