Altmeter question

The altermeter only shows if the system is charging

Hello all,
if the altmeter guage is not working, would the charging system fail? (66 charger)

Whats an altmeter?

Do you mean an Ammeter or a Voltmeter?

An Ammeter measures current in series with itself. If its "open" circuit, it will not allow current to flow to the battery and could cause the "charging system to (sic) fail". It can be bypassed via a jumper until replaced.

A Voltmeter measures voltage across the battery (system) and can show the 14.4V float "charge" state of the battery which is an indicator of charging. If it fails (other than shorted which would be obviously bad) will not prevent charging.

Which method does your car use?

on my inst cluster there's a guage labeled "altmeter" assuming alt is short for altenator. I believe it reads amperage.

then you have answered my question rgaz thank you!
I recently changed over to electronic VR, I've got good ground and clean termanals everywhere but the system is not charging. that gauge is the only thing I can think of that's not working.

Factory installed tachs = Tentsville, Pants USA

rodger who makes those gauge faces?

if your ammeter is shot your car wont have any electricity to it at all the main power goes through the ammeter before it goes to anything else so if its not letting the juice through you wont have any power. if its shot though you can make take the power in lead to it and just move it over to the power out post basically bypassing the gauge so rodger dodger this is not your problem
