I had my engine rebuilt by a machine shop about 40 miles away from me last fall. It was run to break in and check for leaks at that time. I brought it home put it in the car and installed the 4 speed. As I was doing this we noticed a couple drops of oil coming from the rear of the motor. Out comes the tranny to look what is wet. The oil was coming from the rear main area, but after removing the trans. it stopped. We put everything back together. The car was loaded on a flatbed -not running-to go back to the body shop for hood, fenders, and painting of the black stripes. After it was unloaded and set overnight there was 4-6 drops of oil under the clutch inspection cover(surprise). After getting it all toghether and running I will get the same 4-6 drops after every ride. Nothing serious but I want it to stop leaking. The shop that rebuilt the motor wants me to drive the car to them and help take it apart to redo the permatex(I am guessing around the cap?) I would then have to leave the car there overnight to let the silicone dry. I would prefer to not have them work on the car and am wondering how big of job it would be for me to do in my garage. I can't imagine the seals could be bad. Could the upper one be left alone? Can the trans. stay in the car? Thanks for your input.

well are you sure it is oil and not gear oil. could be the front of the tranny. also it might take a while for all the seals on the motor to get wet with oil and swell. if you havent drove it but 10 mile i would put more miles on it and it may stop. hell my old 383 has about a pile of oil 1/2 in diameter when i get done running her

I am sure it is the greenish break in oil that was put in the motor. I put one tank of gas through it before it before the snow started last fall. Alot of people tell me their rear mains leak, but I am hoping to fix it. Just frustrating after spending $4000 on a new motor.

Run it for a while. At the beginning of each season mind has a couple of drips for a while until the rear main swells and then it is fine.

yeah i wouldnt worry about it right now till you start putting some miles on it and then see what happens. it takes awhile for all the gaskets to get swelled up and quit leaking. you might even wanna go around it and snug all the bolts back up on it after you run it for awhile to compensate for the gaskets getting swelled
