I thought I would share rather than loiter...
My latest Craigslist find. 67 Belvedere II, 383, TF, don't know rear yet except it's an 8.75. Bench seat interior. Carpet is missing, but I could see the car had some surface rust, and nothing is rotted through!
The bad:
The motor is sick. :angry1:
I bought it without a carb and battery, so when I got it home, I plunked a 650 Edelbrock AVS on this thing and tried to start it. Flames shoot back up the intake during cranking, and I'm guessing from #3. It won't start & run.
I have parts (iron heads) I can plunk on this thing, but I was told this motor was "rebuilt". I was also told the carb & battery was stolen out of this thing, so apparently, something probably got sucked in #3 and hung the valve open during cranking during previous ownership. As I was trying to line up TDC with a big socket on the crank, turning it backward made the 1 1/4" bolt come loose on the crank--hardly any force either!
Some rebuild! If the same guys that torqued the balancer onto the crank installed the rods and mains, then I have numerous reasons to be scared! I'm not simply going to "get this thing running". The motor's getting pulled!
Still scheming on a low-cost big block build. Thinking of a stroker kit for the original 383 or getting one of my 440's. I'm beginning by setting my goals at 1 hp/cu in for now. This needs to become a fun driver, and soon!
