Found it on craigslist with a 67 four door Newport. Guy doesn't know anything about the motor other then it is still wrapped in plastic.Wants 2k for the engine. I called S & J out of Washington. They did not have specs but from the SS on the crate confirmed it was a stock build from 2010 with a forged crank. He wants 1.5K for the car with a rebuilt 727 unknown rear the original 383 is partially disassembled in place. He doesn't know what heads are on the crate engine and doesn't want to cut the plastic to find out...
So anybody know about S&J's work?
S&J said in 2010 the engine sold for 2k with core charge included, what is it worth now?
Thinking of low balling him on the engine /car package. I want to convert a D100 to a big block auto instead of manual 318.( I tow a vintage camper). 2k ?

Sure, why not? You can reasonably "guess" that the engine is a stock rebuild, either re-ringed or bored with cast pistons and probably a 383 (maybe 400). You can probably see if the heads say xxxxx906 since the valve covers are off and maybe read the date code off the side of the block if it's not in a wooden crate. 71 or older = 383 and 72+ = 400, plus both those motors should have the engine size stamped on a 2"x3" flat pad right next to the distributor hole right on top.

I'd guess the motor is worth $3k-$4k and the Newport about $3k-$4k. You might be able to pull the transmission & use with the crate motor OR just buy the car and rebuild the motor that's in it for about $1500-$2k. You might be able to check the rear end gear ratio if there's a little 1/2"x1" thin metal tag on one of the bolts. It's almost for sure a 8-3/4" non-posi rear end. Maybe sell the parts on forcbodiesonly.com and make back half your money?

I thot the 400 and 383 blocks

I thot the 383/400 blocks had no pad, the 440`s are the ones w/ the pad. Don`t know about the older 426 wedges .

It's been a while since I had my 383, but I "thought" the low-block motors had a pad right next to the distributor & the raised-block motors had a similar pad along the front valley pan rail, towards the driver's side head (I'm sure of that part anyway)

Cash talks. Offer 12 Franklin's for the motor and see what happens.
It's been sitting for 8 years, whether that means anything or not mechanically it does monetarily.
