Looking to rebuild my first 727. Bought a video, read a book, have the service manual, read the great blogs here.... ready to do this.

Lots of you guys have heavily modified and impressive transmissions. My car however is a cruiser, mild 440 build, hemi converter, likely a 3:23 suregrip, 70 Belvedere.

Can you please recommend some complete overhaul kits that you have used and liked?

Also, it seems that most do not come with the low/reverse band. Is this just not typically an item which needs replacing (inspection pending) during overhaul?

Typically an automatic rebuild kit does not come with the bands, but they are readily available and relatively cheap. You can find everything on ebag.

Certainly a ton of options on ebag, but in the times of fly by night internet stores and imported junk, it is a bit unnerving to just pick one that looks good.

I am looking at a couple of kits specifically:

Transtar super deluxe kit on northern Autoparts (does not include low/reverse band) ~$95.
Transtech paper and rubber kit with sealing rings, seals, new steels (not tubled) and Raybestos friction clutches, adjustable modulator, front band, filter and popular bushings and washers.

TSR rebuild kit ~$160
Includes 4 front frictions‚ 4 rear frictions‚ Red lined kickdown flex band‚ Kevlar lined rear band‚ 7 steels‚ gasket and seal kit‚ bushing kit‚ spring and roller kit for the overrunning clutch‚ filter and a seal up kit.

Additional thoughts, or reviews on these, appreciated.

Historically 727 shift kits are done with TransGo kit mine had one and a recent rebuild they put a new one in. What's wrong with your local trans shop? why not just take it there?

Now what kind of fun would that be???

Honestly though it may come to that, but I would really like to do this myself (what better way to spend a weekend?). Regarding the shift kit, I am planning to use the Transgo TF-2. Just need to settle on the rebuild kit.

I would probably go with the tsr kit it if it has both bands. That way you only have to place order. Get some of the assembly lube too. That should get you where you want to be. I assume this trans was in a running car? It worked? Or is the condition not known?

Well, the trans shifted fine for the test drive, but I tore the vehicle apart right after getting it home...it is a sickness I have. :eusa_doh: It acted like it had a high stall converter in it, so either it does (cannot tell from markings, but it was painted red so could have been aftermarket) or it was slipping. It also leaked alot, so could have just been low on fluid.

These guys are local to me but they ship

Personally you should disassemble the trans to see what you need. Very seldom do you need a rear band. That leaves 4 direct frictions, 4 forward frictions (Rabestoes Tans), 8 steels (maybe they may be fine), red K.D. band, steel ring kit, seal kit, pump seal, rear seal, filter. You'll find all this for less than $100, good quality stuff.
