I'm interested in finding out about anyone using NOS vinyl decals within the last few years. I keep seeing these coming up for sale, but my experience with 60s and 70s vinyl products is they look fine when first applied, but within a month of exposure they start to crack and within three months or so they start to split, peel, fade, and have to be removed. The test that I've done have been with bumper stickers and racing decals, which may not be the same grade of vinyl as the NOS stripes and decals are, so I was wondering what results people are having with the NOS ones that are 40-50 years old?

Careful......All depends on how the decals were stored in their life.....Thats the unknown and then you find out a lot of money was pissed away..

Personally,, I wouldn't consider an NOS decal unless it was for a super bird or daytona....

i have a few of them carefully stored away.
the reason is the repo decals look nothing like the originals...
like almost everything repo..

The stripe kit I ordered from Year One, you would swear it was NOS, because the glue was all dried up, naturally it went back those jokers and I got a fresh set from Phoenix Graphix, which was awesome!!!!

Thats the obvious with almost everything today......but buying one without having it in your hands to inspect is a costly risk...

that is the price you have to pay to have something look the way you want it to.
i don't drink or smoke so i have to piss some money away on something
other then a lottery ticket.. its not like its hundreds of dollars..

You and me are on the same page in relation to true OEM parts and cars built with them......For my 69 X I acquired an NOS trunk seal, so if you want to talk about pissing money away......That was about 2500 gallons, lol.....and all the other Nos parts in that build....

Good friend of mine asked me, "Do you ever tally up what you spent." I said, "Nope, I just don't want to know," lol.....

Cannot take it to the grave....may as well enjoy it!

BTW have you put on one of those rear members you got from me...if so pm me a pick!

repo parts are parts of last resort for me
tired of wasting my time making up for thier short comings.
i have wasted months of my time on junk that needs a miracle
nos or nice used is preferred
i have collected a lot of original and nos metal for my projects
and i have parted quite a few cars just to get parts from them.
nos outer rockers,nos trunk extensions,used wheelhouses,used quarters
yeah i'm the nut who paid that much for it
a flat pan like a trunk floor or main floor is ok in repo
but as soon as the part has some sort of radius forget it, pure junk..run forrest run.
i have all my reciepts saved in a box and when i'm done
they will be piled up on the floor and burned..lol

Nothing better than original.....Like you I have wasted more on repro junk through the years.....

at one time it was the only way you could do it.
when AMD came out I got caught up in the koolaide and
after many disappointments, wasted money and a lot of wasted time
I'm back doing what i did before it ever hit the market..lol
what makes me laugh is people will buy a AMD part for 3x the money as used
when used is 10x's better..lol

I bought side stripes for my 68 GTX from Year One - they've been on a year now and look great. Not sure if that's the kind of decal you're referring to - but I'm happy. And I'm not much of a fan of Year One.

not all repo decals are bad, most are pretty good
just a few that they will never bother to get right
or it might not even be possible with the materials available to use today.
white reflective engine call outs for a example.
the original will almost glow in the dark when you look at them at night
the new ones are not even close.

In reading about decals and vinyl, they make reference to UV resistant for the newer stuff. That would be a big concern of mine if the NOS wouldn't hold up after a few years of being exposed to sunlight....these cars weren't built to last more than 10 years anyway. Just my two cents because I have no idea if that technology was available in 69 and I HATE having to do things twice to get it right!

I'm not talking about repops. I'm looking for info on the use of NOS decals and stripes, i.e., ones that have been sitting around in boxes for 40+ years.

By the way. I'm not real happy with Phoenix Graphics. I bought a set of 73 stripes from the four years ago, and I'm having serious issues with them. The center/strobe section is starting to turn black! It's like a mold is growing in the vinyl, but only on the strobe section. I sent them pics a couple of weeks ago and they were supposed to be investigating. Another issue is the bird prints on the sail panels have mostly faded away. I've seen originals from 1973 with more color than these have after just four.
