The insulator fell apart on this alternator that keeps the stud from grounding. It’s in tact and black in the picture. I realize you can remove the alternator 2 body halves and open it up. Anyone ever replace the insulator ? Where can I find one or what can I use to replace the old insulator ?

If it's a date coded original, you can probably find an electric motor shop in your area that can rebuild it for you.

I would recommend you insulate the field wire terminal end so it doesn’t ground to the alternator case
Yeah, I have a new harness now. It has field insulators attached to terminals now.

Come to think of it, I do. I ll compare the cost of doing that or buying a new alternator.

I usually get mine rebuild at a local shop I've been dealing with for years. As a matter of fact they have one of mine now.

Truthfully if you want it restored I highly recommend Jim Ridge from Dixie Restoration, does fantastic work at an honest price and they are show stoppers. I can say you can’t find a better guy to work with either. That being said they are easy to split and repair, or buy a reman ... but if you have a local shop repair it, ask them not to glass bead or sand blast the case because it will destroy any numbers if you are trying to repair a numbers alternator not restore.. always use American made parts in them!

Its very easy, stud shouldn't turn. There is a different type of insulator inside the unit. I would recommend disconnecting the battery first unless you enjoy sparks. Any good rebuilder should have a new or used one on hand.

that's an easy fix... If you wanna know read the dissasembly proceed at 2/3 of this page

https://www.allpar.com/history/mopar/electrical.html

that stud gets an internal isolator too ( called mica washer )

never have seen that insulator being sold separatelly, but on kits.

https://store.alternatorparts.com/partno605.aspx

this kit includes the brushes isolators, but on pic shows the earlier squarebacks where one of them is diff from the unit you have ( laters squareback ). Althought on list they list 3 brush holders... maybe they include all kind and you will match them with your alt

Sure I just can check on line, but sure some rebuilt shop will be able to source it
