Trying to find out what this switch in the top of my dash is for, it's a '69 Charger R/T SE. No AC, just heater and rear window defogger.

At first I thought it was some home made thing but the switch has a Chrysler pentastar and the part number 2947262 on the side with 36033 below that. Searching it online all I could find was the description "fan switch" so I'm a little stumped :eusa_think:

Never saw one, mine is a 1969 318 A/C and has no hole. All of my heat A/C controls are contained in the center with the rest. Seems weird they would put the fan speed switch separate. If you don't figure it out let me know, I have a reprint of the original service manual and might be able to find out for you next time I'm in the garage.

Must have something to do with the rear defroster. Maybe a fan speed control?

I'm 99% sure that the rear window defogger switch. This is a pretty rare option and the switch never had a home in the dash so it got added somewhere convenient.

Defroster

Here is a pic of where I mounted my rear defroster switch. I have got one of those switches too, it came with my defroster. I did not use it, but found another rocker switch and mounted it into the dash, where it belongs. Works fine, except it is only one speed.

Here is a scan of the service manual that shows the defroster switch location.

Yeah I assumed it was for the defroster because the switch has 3 positions which would match the 3 speeds the blower motor is supposed to have. :eusa_think:

Haha R/Tguy I was just about to mention you, where was that switch that was originally in the car (that looks like mine) located before you replaced it with how the manual shows it?

The defroster and the switch was in a box with a bunch of other parts. It was already out of the car. Not sure where that other switch goes. I just followed the manual and put in my switch. The Coronet and Dart don't even show a rear defroster in their instrument panels.

Damn! I have the same problem most of my car was in laundry baskets when I bought it lol but my switch was installed in the dash still.
Do you know which factory yours came from? Maybe different factories did different things with the defrost switch install.

That's the blower switch for mel gibson's mad max road warrior car.

Of course, I might be wrong...

Great movie, one of my all time favorites, next to Bullitt.

 or the switch to arm the explosives rigged to my fuel tank lol

@ RTguy, so was mine :eusa_think: maybe a difference between '68 and '69? I'm just taking shots in the dark now.
I'll probably just reinstall it where i found it for the sake of not having a random hole in my dash and hacking up my woodgrain cluster panel to make another switch fit :shruggy: yours does look good though

That looks like it was probaly added by the dealer when it was new the bracket looks like it is a factory bracket ,

I think it's the switch to turn on the super charger! The Fast and Furious charger LOL

Thanks for the compliment. I did some more checking around and found out that in '69 they did move the defroster switch next to the heater controls. I scanned a copy of the '69 dash.

Awesome, thanks! I was meaning to look that up but just been too busy. Mystery solved then! But now I'm just wondering what piece I'm missing on the switch itself (mine's just got the steel rod coming out of the switch)

Nevermind, found it. It's a heater/ac control style plastic piece that says "R.DEF" Now that just leaves the job of finding one or making one :eusa_think:

correct - in 1969 it was moved to next to the heater controls because the optional SE woodgrain fascia would cover the existing hole used in 1968. 1970 was the same positioning as 1969.

It's also the same switch location for R/T convertibles when equipped with Rallye Dash. Does the back of your switch say TOP?
