I've searched through many starter posts but couldn't find the answer. Has or does anybody use this combo. The header size I'll be going with is 1 3/4" doug's. If the 440source one doesn't work does any one know of one that will work that is under $150? Thanks.

doug thorley headers

ive used doug thorley headers. i got them right now on my 73 charger 440. i still have to use a starter heat shield tho

I run 2" primary headers by Doug with a Powermaster mini-starter, which has about the same dimensions, in my 67 b-body. Tight fit, but no mods required with respect to the starter fitment. However, I did have issues where the header bolted to the heads. 452 head castings require some serious grinding on the header flanges due to the "lip" cast into the head above the exhaust ports. Beware.

69Runner- If the 440 source starter is the same as a "late model" starter then yes.

Greg- It is a big block 383

Mr. B - I don't think I would have the same issues as you. I want to run 1 3/4" tubes (as recommended by 69runner a few months back for my set up) and my heads are the Stealth heads.

So is the consensus that the combo would work. And to 69runner what is this late model starter? I've heard that some model year Dakotas have a lightweight high torque starter that we can use. Is this true and are there any mods that would have to be done?

So those will work with the headers? Also what year and any mods required?

The only thing that has to be done is remove the extra piece where the cables attach. It isn't necessary on our cars

I even use one of those "late" (Denso) starters on my slant 6 Valiant. I got tired of the old starter saying "Neeooo Neeooo Neooo" when I went fire it up in the morning.

I would call Dougs and ask them which starter they would recommend. I've got some headers on my 440 that wouldn't fit the "late" starter, but an old starter out of a Duster fit fine. (Shorter body compared to the stock starter.)
