got a small cooling problem-o seems after sitting for a few years i now have a cooling issue. wasnt there before and now its rearing its ugly head high.

she has a new pump, t-stat (180 dg), hoses, new clutch style fan on it also. just before i set it up for a few years the radiator was gone through. its a stock 26 incher and original to the car.

im now seeing temps raise up to about 180, t stat opens, and the temp at that point slowly climbs upwards of 210. she will climb slowyly to that point while driving and or while at idle. when you shut her down the temps climb to about 220 or so but drop right away to 205 when you crank it up.

new radiator caps on it also. in fact ive tried two new ones from stant.

shes got a mild 500 hp small block in it...but its the same motor thats always been in her. any suggestions?

what i am leaning towards doing at this point is buying one of these ebay 2 core or 3 core aluminum radiators for the car. and make a shroud for it also.

Was it sitting with water in the cooling system? If so, that may be your problem. Have you flushed it? May take more than one time as rust tends to take awhile to get rid of as it keeps flaking off over time. Not only will it mess up the flow in the radiator, but can get in the way of cooling passages between the heads and block....

Yank the radiator and bring it to a shop and have it recored again. I dont know how long it sat. But if it was long it could have coagulated and or sedimented.

im agreeing with yall. i just finished flushing it.
seems to be holding at 190 now. ill test drive it again and see what i can get it up to now. either way im leaning towards a new radiator.

i am eye balling the aluminum ones off ebay. any body have any input on these?
im looking at a replacement for my current piece. wich is top center inlet with a drivers side outlet.

or is converting to the newer style water pump a better idea?

If your going to flush put a pantyhose over the discharge hose to catch what might come out. This will give an indication of how bad it was. If it's bad remove the two lower screw in block plugs and flush out through them.

cool. already flushed it so the hose is out. but i think ill run it a while with some of the peak radiator flush stuff in it. then do it again. ill pull the two plugs also.

but as it sits it seems to be acting better.
now if i can keep from jinxing myself

A buddy of mine made a screen for the discharge to protect the radiator for whenever a new build came together. One thing that vatting a block doesn't do is knock out the rust buildup.
