Hey y’all,

I’m in the process of installing a carter electric fuel pump to overcome hot startup problems. The pump isn’t intended to run continuously.

I’ve installed the wiring to the relay located under the package tray. I have the switch wired to the signal side and will take power from the fuse box.

My question is about the power side. I was going to hook it up to share the power takeoff for the electric windows on the instrument panel. The other option is through the firewall to the starter relay. I prefer going to the instrument panel but thought I’d check with the experts before I did it.

appreciate y’all’s thoughts!

Can you draw fuel through that pump with it in the off position?

Carter pumps are "diaphram" style so fuel should flow with the pump off.

Power for a short period like you're doing can come from pretty much anywhere. Put a fuse at the end you draw from - if there's a short in the line to the pump it'll blow the fuse. Keep in mind that the highest current draw is the moment you hit the switch then it drops off. You're at greater risk of blowing something if you were to sit there flicking the switch on and off.
