Need to replace the left axle seal on my diff, 8 3/4 741 (1964-1972). I won't get into the green bearing vs tapered, but I am going to replace outer bearings on both sides while she is in winter hibernation. When I pull the axles out , I was warned that there is a pin near the centre section that can fall out. Is that true of this diff? If so, how do I stop it, or correct it once the pin falls out. Photos would be great if there are any. The rest of the procedure seems pretty straight forward,, if using the green bearings.

The buttons are only there if you have a sure-grip, otherwise, the axles only ride against the center spider shaft. The buttons usually stay in, sometimes retained with a clip thru them, but can possibly fall out. I have fished them out, and put them in with a tube with a thru-wire to hold them (NOT fun). If you have the axles out, and the button pulls out due to the oil sticking them to the axle, just remove the 3rd member, put them in with grease to hold them, and reassemble.

Just give it a shot. What's the worst that could happen... they fall out.
