I'm cleaning up my 8 3/4 axle to paint it, and I've noticed oil around the vent breather. There's some around the breather and some has collected underneath the diff housing. It's not enough to drop onto the floor, just damp with oil. Is this normal?

That is totally normal for a little to be around it. If not seals will be seeping .. it’s just everything getting warmed up and expansion with everything moving/ turning.. if it plugs up you will have axle seals fail..

Had a neighbor that I replaced the axle seals on his Impala front wheel drive trans 3 times. He refused to go get a new vent put in the transmission/transaxle and the result was he blew out the seals one final time then dumped all of his trans fluid on the ground and smoked his transmission. Because he wouldn't listen to me. Oh well he scrapped the car over a 20.00 part.
