B-29 being restored for flight

Thanks. Will be good to have more than one in the air.
I contribute to the Commemorative Air Force.
Right now the "FIFI" is the only B29 flying.
I'm wondering if anyone on here besides me was at the Atlanta WarBird Weekend last month.
They were supposed to have a Supermarine Spitfire, which was the big draw for me.
How often do you get to see on of those on this side of the pond?
But it was stuck on a grass field in Virginia due to weather.
We were about to leave for lunch and got word a Mustang was in bound.
So we turned around.
I was disappointed to "only" see the Mustang. I think you thumbed a ride in one recently?

Funny this 29 is named after a movie character.
Of all the "characters" at the event, "Rose" was closest to my heart.
Gearheads rule.
"Remembering The Forgotten Mechanic".
Kudos to this one for his work on this plane.

I went for a joy ride in a B-17. That was a blast!!!!

Expensive, but a blast!

I saw that when it first came out. What a heartache!!!! It would have been interesting to have a short follow up story.

I saw that video, and those guys were serious jack asses. One guy died, and they lit the thing on fire in the end!?!?! Why couldn't they just transport the thing to a hanger, were they could safely rebuild it?

Because it had crashed landed in the Arctic decades earlier & they got it running where it sat.

they have been working on Doc for a long time now. Be great to have another Super Fort in the air. Damn shame about Kee Bird. It was a damn foolish mistake not to have someone eyeballing the APU.

They were selling rides all week, Dickie.
Yep, I would have liked to bought one , but I settled for watching it take off.
That's a man who flew on them and had some kind of French medal.
I forget what it was.

Nice aluminum portrait, onlyone. :) It really shows that the B-17 was quite a small aircraft, only ten feet longer than a DC-3, but they were strong and brought a lot of crews back home.

Love WWII Aircraft. B-17G is my favorite model. I built & played with models as a kid & worked in a hobby store as a teenager. I live pretty close to a small airport that has B-17's, B-25's, Mustang's...etc.. fly in from time to time for airshows. One day I was cutting the lawn & heard what I thought was a Harley going up the road with loud pipes. I turned it off and then looked up to see a Mustang doing a high bank turn! Love those old radial engines.

Last I heard rides on the 17 were about $500 a pop.

The Confederate Air force (now renamed due to PC) as the Commemorative Air Force has a large collection.

THE VET IN THE LAST PICTURE WAS A WASTE GUNNER DURING THE WAR.AFTER THE FLIGHT WE GOT TO TALKING, HE PULLED UP HIS ARM SLEEVE AND EXPLAINED TO ME ON ONE MISSING HIS ELECTRICAL UNDERWEAR THAT THEY WHORE SHORTED OUT AND BRANDED HIM ACROSS HIS ARM AND CHEST LIKE A TOASTER ELEMENT! BEFORE HE COULD UNPLUG IT FROM HIS STATION.
THIS WAS AT AT 21,000 FEET.NEAR-50 BELOW ON A 10 HOURS MISSION TO BOMB THE OIL REFINERY AT VIENNA, FLORISDORF, AUSTRIA 1945.HE EXPLAINED
HE WAS 21 AT THE TIME .I WAS HONORED TO MEET HIM AND THANKED HIM FOR HIS SERVICE AND SACRIFICE.
ONE OTHER NOTE, THE SECOND TO LAST PICTURE SHOWS THE B-17G BOMBER "NINE O' NINE" LANDING ON THE RUNWAY BELOW AS WE TURN ON FINAL AT REPUBLIC AIRPORT FARMINGDALE N.Y.
IF YOU EVER GET A CHANCE TO FLY ON ONE OF THESE PIECES OF AMERICAN HISTORY GO FOR IT ! IT WILL BE A MEMORY FOR A LIFETIME .

I didn't quite have the $ to ride in a hell cat (not mopar) at an airshow a few years back. I did have the $ to ride in a Huey though. Way cool. And the next year rode in a pre- WW2 bi-plane.

I would like to see them restore more than just our planes though,I have always had a fondness for a messerschmidt me-109.

there are some restored German and Japanese planes, but very few originals survived. IIRC there are two authentic Me-109s flying, and a handful of the ones built by the Spanish after the war.
