Is there a difference in the 68-70 b body rear end housing 8 3/4 versus the standard say 318 housing in a 70 coronet? Someone had told me the housings were all the same, it was just the axles and 3rd members that made up the difference in these (besides the springs). Reason i ask is i have a 70 Super Bee rear axle assembly that came out of a V coded auto car. I see that one of the axle tubes has a slight bend in it (car hit a pole in town with only 9k miles on it back in 1970). I wanted to pull the guts out of it, and put in another housing, like in my 70 coronet 318 car's housing, if possible. I also have another housing in a 69 Bee, but i doubt its the original housing in that one. Will any of these housing work for what i want to do?

All 68,9,70 8 3/4 housings are the same, but most 70 318s had 7 1/4 rear.

The rears are all different, parts from an 8 3/4 will not work in a Dana 60
Now if you have two 8 3/4 the parts would interchange to a degree. The 8 3/4
Came with 3 different gear cases 741,742 and 489 each of these will bolt into an
8 3/4 housing rear axles are all the same as long as they are 8 3/4 b body length

thats what i thought. As long as i have another 8 3/4 from like 68-70, i am good to go. thanks guys1

Actually, it was an 8 1/4" axle. The 7 1/4" axle was never installed in any V8 B body.

You need a 68-70 B body 8 3/4" housing. The axle shafts are all the same in all 68-70 8 3/4" axles. The 3rd member will technically interchange and fit, but they had different versions. There was an 1 3/8" pinion lighter duty carrier that was available in 68 and midway through 1969. The last 3 numbers on the casting was '741. These were used in all light duty applications, slant six, 318 and 383 2 barrel when the "towing package" was optioned. The next unit was an 1 3/4 pinion HD unit, casting # '742. Then in mid 1969, the previous 2 were discontinued and the 1 7/8" tapered pinion '489 case was introduced and ran through until the end of production in 1974.

Are you sure you have an 8 3/4 and not a dana 60? Post a pic and I'm sure you will get an answer quick.

I have to disagree about 7 1/4 NEVER being installed in a v8 B body.

All of my 1966 coronet v8 cars (I tend to buy unmolested mostly original cars) have had an 8 3/4.

My first 67, a white hat special 318 auto car- had an 7 1/4. I don't think the 8 1/4 came into production until later.

I did have a 1970 Coronet 500 318 auto parts car. I don't remember the axle specifically, but it was NOT an 8 3/4, or I would have kept it.

I'll have to get a pic of the rear end, but it doesn't have a cover on the back of it. I do know its a 8 3/4, though as I personally pulled it out of a wrecked 70 Super Bee V coded 440-6 auto car that was wrecked with 9k miles on it, back in 1970. I still have the title, and vin plate off the car. Was an E87 car, 2 door post burnt orange with power bulge hood. I still have the hood, too. Only reason i asked about the housing was because when it hit the pole sideways, it bend one of the housing tubes just a little bit.

.
Good stuff here. When I restored my 70RR, early build with orig axle, the 70 repro rear axle brake lines did not fit. Turns out I have a 69 axle. AFAIK, only difference between 69-70 8 3/4 housing is vent location.
