I have a 72 Roadrunner that I am looking to buy rims for. I've read that in the back a 4 to 4.5 backspace is ideal. But what about the fronts?

It depends on the width of the wheel. A 7 inch wheel with a 3.5 BS works. You could take an 8 inch wheel to 4.0 or a 9" wheel to 4.5.
Also, a larger diameter such as a 17 or larger allows more back spacing too since the wheel is further away from the lower ball joint/steering arms.
