Hi all, greetings from SD,

I bought a '74 RM21 code gem around 1988 while I was in the Army. It was a completely original 56k beauty, red with black trim and interior and a 318 2bbl/4spd with Hurst pistol shifter (we didn't go fast but looked good doing it). I sold it to a guy in CA around 1992 while I was in college and always missed her; that B body is just one of the best looking Mopars ever in my opinion.

Fast forward to 2012... I found an old registration at my folks' place, and on a whim I put the VIN in my Firefox search box. Lo and behold it came up on a car club website in New Zealand! The owner had a page on the club's site, so I emailed him, we corresponded, and I ended up sending him the original 1974 license plates that were with the car when I bought it, but kept when I sold it. He had bought it on ebay from a guy in CA around 2006 and had it ever since.

In 2014 I was working overseas and had become friends with a Brit expat living in Auckland. He wanted me to come to his wedding there, so I got ahold of Gary and let him know I would be in NZ. It turned out he's only about an hour out of Auckland, so one afternoon while I was there, drove down and met him and his wife. We took the old girl for a spin and he even let me drive (on the wrong side of the road of course).

Anyway, ever since, I have increasingly had the urge to find another red/black RM21 car. I never learned a lot about these cars at the time, and have forgotten what I did know. I had assumed '73's and '74's are basically identical, but had a guy tell me the '74 suspension is different/better than the '73. I find that very unlikely, but I'm not an expert. If the suspensions changed, more likely it was '72 to '73? Any input on that question, and any leads on a good car (not interested or time for a project) appreciated.

First pic is just after I bought her, next are in NZ with Gary, the new owner on the left.

that's a great story, good luck on your search

Nice car, I hope you find another!

Regarding the suspension, 73/74 are basically the same, except ball joints in 73's were threaded, 74 used press in. 73 leaf springs were a one year spring, so different slightly than 74. Those are the only differences I know of regarding the suspension. Also 73 hood has vents on the rear and location of the window squirters, 74 had no vents and integrated window squirters on the wipers. 74 Gas tank has a hump, consequently the hump in the trunk, 73 did not. 340 was no longer available in 74.

Thanks for that quick rundown of the differences from '73 to '74, I knew about the 340/360 motors, but not the rest of that. Being the differences are minor, I'll be looking at both years as a replacement.

Welcome to FBBO Dave. :thumbsup:

It's a real small world Dave.....after having a closer look at the pic with you and Gary....turns out I have met Gary, and he is a very good friend of my buddy 'MowPar'. Here are a couple of snaps I have shown here before - taken at Gary's beach-bach down near the Whangamata Beach Hop;

and my GTX two cars along...

I'll be seeing Gary in a few weeks at the annual Mother's Day party in Waiuku. :thumbsup:

Wow, yes, it is a small world! I haven't heard from Gary lately, give him my warmest regards! Let him know if he's interested in parting with the RR, I'm in the market to take her back, if he'll pay the shipping!:lol:
