Will a bad alternator cause your car to surge? And want to die at stop signs?

If an alternator is not charging, for whatever reason, the energy is only supplied by the battery. Once the voltage in the battery drops below 9 volts, the coil can not build a large enough magnetic field and the secondary voltage will not build large enough to want to make the jump across the air gap at the spark plug. Also, the drop in voltage at the primary windings will not result in enough coil in-rush and the dwell cycle will shorten and the car will want to die.

I'll "third" that assuming your alternator is flat out not charging. If you have something shorting out then possibly. Sounds like you might have other issues. Big vacuum leak perhaps? If you have power brakes it's possible the booster is bad.

what kind of carb are you running?, have you checked the float level?
if there was an internal leak at the power brake booster, the pedal would be really hard when the brakes were applied, then it would run rough with your foot on the brake,
basically you'd have no power assist, it would be pretty obvious,
if it was before the booster (directly from the manifold) it would be rough all the time.

you could put your hand over the carb and try to "choke it out" if the idle speeds up you have a vacuum leak.

Cars in the shop. The alternator was not bad. Had a short between the alternator and the battery.
