How do you know you have a bad shifter mechanism?

What makes you ask the question? What are you experiencing?

Had shifter that flopped around, in neutral it was hard to tell 1st and 3rd apart had to consciously put in either gear. Broken spring.

Look for separator plates that are bent & make sure it is adjusted properly. My 70 shifter is "loose" by modern standards
