Ok Im removing the ball joints from my lower control arms. (73 Satellite)

One is obviously a screw in type as noted by the socket on the ball joint. I got it out after figuring out that theres a retainer on the top!!

The other side does not have the fitment for the socket. It is rounded. Is it possiblly a pressed in ball joint??

Thanks

Richie

Yup, sounds like it is pressed in. One of the control arms musta been replaced at some point.

you can rent ball joint presses at most big chain auto parts stores.

Thanks Rusty

I didnt want to start pressing it out until I had some advice on it.

That was my thought as well.

I have access to a press.

Thanks for the heads up!

Richie

Looks like I have one of each.. Got all out fine..now on to rebuilding them.

Thanks for the help.

Rebuilding them??? Think that is going to be more problematic than simply replacing them!!!
Have Brand New MOOG in stock, if you want the best... private label cheaper if you need to save money...
Best to simply call me -- Craig -- 516 - 485 - 1935...New York..

Wow - wish I'd done more research ........ everything I read up to today said lowers were press fit. My replacements I ordered are press fit. Anyway , gave my LCA's to a buddy who had press access - he did a great job with the torsion bar bushing removal, but pressed out the ball joints, obviously the threads are shot , I'm assuming I can press in the new and tack weld ........ won't happen again.

I have a 73 Roadrunner with threaded lower ball joints, when i went to replace them, i just cranked them out with a big socket and cheater bar, well, after unscrewing the threads were shot. So i had to get another set from salvage. The best practice with threaded ball joints is to heat the outer sleeve with a torch, and they will come out with less damage to the threads and will be able to accept the new threaded ball joint.
