Best Air Cleaner/s Choice for 2X4 Tunnel Ram?

I'm piecing together my low-buck tunnel ram setup. So far I've got $255 into an intake and a pair of Holley 1850 600 carbs. Another $30 for linkage and carb studs and the only thing left is an air cleaner and fuel lines.

What do you guys think is best? I've narrowed the choices down to:

1) Hilborn-style scoop
2) Velocity stacks
3) Two round air cleaners
4) One oval air cleaner

Car is used for 1/8 mile racing and cruise nights. I'll run it without a hood until I'm sure I like it. Then if I do, I will buy a fiberglass hood to cut a hole in (I just can't bring myself to cut up a perfectly good original hood). Thanks for any feedback. :headbang:
 
I would do the Hilborn style scoop on top & a gauze type filter like a K&N... my $0.02 cents

if you don't want to cut the perfect stock hood, buy a bolt on flat fiberglass hood from someone like $399 from US Body Source or someone else.. get a little weight savings & better weight transfer too boot
 
get the k/n velocity stacks.they not only do a great job of filtering the air but the stacks will improve your airflow.always run a velocity stack when you have the room,they will improve your power even vs a carb with no air cleaner at all.
 
I wouldn't run K&N on my worst enemy's car.......well.........maybe I would. It's a pretty commonly known fact that K&N doesn't filter any better than a screen door. If it was me, I would find elements in WIX regular papre filters that fit whatever you're gonna run. Standard paper typer filters filter MUCH better than any kinda performance filter. Damned if i'd want dirt in my motor.

me too Rusty, I don't know were that came from either, but it's wrong about the K&N filter not filtering anything, they may not filter as good as a paper filter, but they are also far superior in flow, to any paper filter, hands down, they are cleanable & have to be maintained & spritzed with filter oil after cleaning....

I certainly will, now get back in your cave...LOL... for a race car they are far better, than no air-cleaner... I've had them on every engine I own for over 25+ years now, I've never had any parts failure or excessive wear in the cylinders on anything I own, ever using them... you can't trust everything you read on the Internet either... I'm sure your well aware of that fact....
 
RRR is correct. K&N doesn't filter as effectively as a paper element. I do run a K&N on one of my cars though. A friend gave me a 14x6 element years ago because it wouldn't fit under his hood. My Sat has a six pack hood and is driven in all kinds of weather. A paper element can get soggy with a forward facing scoop.
