For a Mopar used 95% for Drag Racing:

1) What is the best fluid, mineral or synthetic ?
2) What is best type of fluid for Torqueflites...Dextron or Mercon or ATF- ?
2) What are your favorite Brands that you think work the best ?
3) For a Fluid Change....how many quarts would the tranny take ?...not with a new and empty converter, but a fluid change with the transmission already having been in service.

Let us hear all your experienced reports...

Thanks

I just threw in this old picture from 1967 to give you guys another Mopar to look at....

I use Wall Mart Dexron. I just tore the trans apart. Clutches and bands look like new. Mine takes 10 qts on a change. I reused what I drained out. Only had 100 passes

rick allison at A&A built both my torqueflites. he said to use dexron/merconIII. never any issues.

use what the trans dipstick says to use....Dexron is what's on mine

Lots of variables with this question. And you will get lots of answers that all can be correct. Things need to know, deep or standard pan ? Stock converter maybe 11'' or 12'' ? Aftermarket 9''or 10''? With or without drain plug in the converter ? Quarts will be anywhere from 5 to 9.Maybe 10 or more with a deep pan. As far as type, old school guys like me would say "Type F and one quart of non detergent 30 weight oil".Now-a-days,Dextron type III or IV.

Been using ATF 4 but right now, my oldest vehicle is a 95 but I'm planning on using it in my old junk too....if and when I ever get it going again and that depends on if it's an automatic.

All I have ever used is the Mopar ATF and its been ATF+4 ever since its been out. Before that it was ATF+3 and so on. I worked at a Dodge dealer the last 25 years and since I did warranty trans work I had a nice stash of the ATF+4 fluid. So I also have not paid for any trans fluid the last 20 some years. But I never have had any problems using the Mopar trans fluid. Ron

I'm telling you guys. Save some money and run the Wall Mart stuff. We've been running it awhile under brutal conditions with no clutch or band failure. Both motors north of 850hp.

Huh? i've been running type F ... maybe i should switch:dontknow:

Running a PTC 9.5" converter & MP deep pan

That's what I always did... but then my Cousin and some other Super Stock guys started loosing transmissions 904 with all the lightweight parts, they changed to the Lucas Marine synthetic and it solved the problems. Could not figure it out??? Then they found out that the transmisison fluid had additives taken out... just like the oil. Except the Marine stuff still has the same additives.

I have the elcheapo dexron in mine now but then again it is just a 727 with no brake... just a RMVB. When I change it I might just spring for the Marine synthetic...

We run one with a brake and one without. The one with the brake is a turbo motor so it sits on it a while to build boost.

There is no problem with type F as many racers prefer it. I run the Mopar ATF+4 because that and the type F both work good in Mopar trannys when racing. And since I have the ATF+4 for free I use it. If I had type F for free I would use it also in a car for racing. They both work and some prefer the Type F and some prefer the Mopar ATF+4. In my opinon they both work fine as they have for me. The ATF+4 has never let me down or given me any trans problem and since the price is good I will keep using it. But if the type F is working for you then you can stick with it. Ron

Type F Walmart for 30 years. No issues in 904 or 727 trans.

I use ATF4. No issues. 4000k stall and 750hp. Street use only. I also have one of those derale oil pans with the tubes in it and extra capacity. Also a 25k or so btu cooler.

Just asking because I'm curious. I've used B&M Trick Shift in my 727s several times, though only on the street. Never could afford the racing bit. Anything going on with Trick Shift these days, that I might not know about?

Side thing, Mike. Would have been late 60s, early 70s...ever run, or know a driver named Jim Coursey? He ran a Nova funny car. Just wondering!
