Best Mini-Starter?

Running 496 stroker (383 block) w/tti headers. The original full size starter is about to die. It has always seemed to have a little problem turning this stroker over. 10.5 to 1 compression.

Would prefer something made in USA that can crank this motor over that fits well and has a proven track record of longevity.

All opinions appreciated.

i can't speak on longevity but when i did my research some time ago i came up with Mcrobb. highly recommended, made in america but not cheap. i have one on my hemi and tti with lots of clearance but not used yet.

Sold three of them and keeping one for myself, no hassle, runs fast and so far have not heard anything bad about them, I think it is a remanufacture of the later starters in vans etc. but I am not sure. It runs twice as fast than the original one on my 383.
And they deliver fast! Check their feedback, over 7000 deals an zero complains.

Best one is one that works and is free but whenever I'm junk yarding, I keep my eyes open for any new looking starters. Generally, I have a test battery with me for checking out electrical parts and I can test the starter without pulling it. The self serve yards usually sell them cheap and these modern era stock mini starters have no problem turning over engines with 11-1 or more. Pass that ancient low powered starter on to someone what wants to keep their ride looking original and step into the modern era.

I got one from Ebay awhile back. I was just trying to figure out exactly which one I bought. It looks like its from "DBelectrical". I love it, It sounds awesome starting the car with the 4 to 1 gearing ratio reduction. And a mini so much smaller. And I can actually remove it without having to uninstall my full length header. Here is the difference in size between the factory starter and the mini. Good Luck!

the best is the meziere starter TS104. spins like no other stsrter out there. they are however a little longer than the mini starter.

I saw elsewhere that a starter from a Dakota v8 is a mini. And that it can easily turn a stroker. The gentleman that posted had a 500+ inch engine. Sorry, no p/n!

They are on all the V6 and V8 Dakotas and full size trucks and vans. Most of the time, you will have to modify the connectors since the ones on the newer starters are bit larger...iirc, the smaller eye is the one that won't fit.

Thought I would revive this post for a question. I think my original starter has a bad place in it somewhere so this might be a great time to switch from the stock starter to newer mini-starter from a Dakota. I'm going to run to a local junkyard to see if there are any dakotas there. Would anyone know about what year range trucks to look for?

You don't have to look for only Dakotas as all V6 and V8 motors used the same starter, I got mine off a late 80's van. I don't remember the cutoff year but later models have a pigtail connector that I understand can be difficult to adapt.

Thanks for the input on what year cars to get these mini-starters off of. I just went today on lunch break to a u-pick-it yard down the road just to see what dodge trucks they had left. I found a few from the 90s and a couple from the 00s, but in the very back I found a 96 ram van... and the best part is I found its mini-starter sitting on the floor board with the cables still attached. I didn't even have to get dirty taking it off. It came off a 96 318 so it should fit. Hopefully it is in good shape. Not to bad for $13 bucks.

Yep thats how you do it! They work so much better then the POS old big slow cranking ones our cars came with. Leave them for the resto guys and enjoy the benefits of modern times.
