I'm posting this here instead of the paint area to insure more see it and return I get more opinions. I'm on the edge of buying a Binks model 7 (yes I can still get one) because my HVLP Devilbiss Finish Line has me at wits end. The last car I painted with my old siphon feed rolled out of the garage with zero runs and no need for any sanding and buffing, that gun needed replaced so I thought I was stepping up to the "improved" HVLP and have regretted every second of it. With this gun it's either orange peel or runs with no middle ground, I've got 3 different fluid tips (1.3 1.5 1.9 I think) and have tried them all, adjusted pressure etc, I'm done with it. This gun will make a fine primer gun but I'm tired of wet sanding so what do you suggest?

Sata jet 2000Gravity hvlp or anest iwata , goofy name , awesome gun

I have a gun by de vilbius pro lite it lay paint down great sorry no spell ck. on fingers. 20# of air at the gun and a good at @ the 500.00 range it's what I painted my 65 with. 3 tip sizes included when you buy it. for primer I have a 3m gun that is primer only. the cups are disposable and the tips are use once and throw away. it blows primer on great even slick sand spray able filler large tip so your putting on the car not in the air

Really like my Devilbiss Finishline gun. It's an older (12yrs) FLG2, problem is rebuild kits aren't available for it anymore. Wish I knew that before I gave it a good cleaning. Finally found some fluid tip seals to keep it going.
Is yours a FLG4 or 3?

Pardon my ignorance but what makes these guns better than a Harbor Freight cheapie?

Quality!!!!! I've got a cheapo Summit mini HVLP gun that I bought for small jobs and let's just say it occupies space in my cabinet because it does such a terrible job. The big differences are, fit, crappy seals, lesser quality materials and just crude designs. A high quality gun will have precise nozzles that make a better pattern, more effective adjustments, better quality fittment, etc. To me the big thing is how well the tip disperses the paint making a silky smooth coat of paint without the little gasp or spits requiring the spot to be hit again.

I painted my van with one and didn't have a problem with it. Flowed real nice, good coverage. I have some other no name smaller HVLP that was part of a tool package that I got and I use it all the time for my smaller jobs repairing Vinyl, Leather, Plastics on cars and it works just as good as the larger one I have.
A $500 gun don't work any better than a cheap one, I guess you just have to be smarter than the tool your using?

Haha, maybe some peoples expectations are higher? My cheap one is a piece of junk, my medium priced Devilbiss is a good primer gun (not a good paint gun) and the tried and true Binks have always done a great job for me. Saying a $500.00 gun doesn't work any better that a cheap Chinese anchor is just ridiculous, talk to any body man and they'll disagree with you.

Thanks guys, Sata and Iwata are two names that keep coming up when talking to body shops. The funny thing is the older guys say the only reason they use HVLP's is because they're no longer aloud to use there Binks (siphon feed).

A few years ago I bought a Sata Jet 3000 RP. I don't consider myself a painter, but I was able to achieve a really nice finish using it. Now I only use my suction type Binks for primer. This came with a 1.3 tip. I'll post up some photos of the finished cars with it at the end.

Since these aren't cheap to purchase, I would recommend trying to get a spray gun cleaner to protect your investment. This is what I have. You clean the gun religiously after use and it will last you a LONG time.

Here are a few pictures of the cars I sprayed using it. The Challenger was a metallic and it didn't "tiger stripe" at all.

Remember, I'm not a painter by any means. If you are, you probably could get by with minimal wet sanding / buffing to achieve results like this.

The first car I painted with the sata, made me look pretty good! lol Yes, I know lots of guys paint with cheap guns, but I can't agree more with Devin on the reasons for getting a nice gun.

Really i'd like to see your jobs if you say that! Buy a good DeVillbiss GTI or Pro or techna and tell me you didn't use far less paint and got a better job.

Hey Gpuller. I was a Binks and Devilbiss dealer and still have a couple of bins of assorted parts. If you give me part numbers of what you need I'll look thru what I have and hook you up.

If you were a dealer then by all means give some input on the guns NJRR.

747- Not an expert. When I started in my business over 30 years ago (retail/commercial paint, not automotive) we sold some atomizing guns, then moved into more airless equipment (Titan and Graco). IIRC, the Binks #7 was a top seller. With the right fluid needle/nozzle and air cap setup, painters were able to do some fine finish work on furniture, kitchen cabinets and trim. Equally suitable for automotive finish work. No recollection about any specific Devilbis guns. It was a long time ago. LOL. All that being said, If anyone needs any old parts that I might have collecting dust, shoot me a PM.
