I was having trouble with a USA made Standard I got from RockAuto. The amp gauge was swinging back and forth. I got one of those $16 electronic Chinese replacements, and it’s been fine ever since. This is for the ‘69 and down relay type.

I had one of the solid state VRs lasted about 3 years and out of warranty. Had to replace it on a road trip with one from Autozone and a lifetime warranty. I keep the box and receipt in the trunk with all my spare parts.

Currently out of stock, but I grabbed this one from Amazon. It's solid state and it works just fine.
