We just picked up a '76 Power Wagon with a big block/auto.
It would have come with a 400, but we think it's a 383... The guy I got it from didn't know anything about Mopars, and he traded for it--it'd been gone through, and that owner was a Mopar guy--Ramcharger seats, and during the repaint he painted "383" on the hood and painted "Mopar" tastefully on the tail gate as a detail.
So it's possible he dropped in a 383 in place of the 400. I'll find out when we get the motor out this weekend and measure the bore and stroke (gotta pull the heads).

My question is about the alternator and power steering brackets--the pulleys don't line up perfectly--they're about half a row off, on both belts.

They APPEAR to be factory, but the power steering bracket looks like they tried to space it forward with a couple washers on one of the bolts.

I know that sometimes a rebuilt or parts-store water pump will have the pulley flange pressed on to an improper depth, but that's not the problem here--there isn't much clearance between the back of the pulley and the housing, so it can't go back any further, while the alternator and PS pump pulleys are reward of the water pump pulley.

It's been a long time since I've been immersed in Mopars: It isn't possible for a SB alternator and PS bracket to be bolted to a big block, is it?

I know where there's a junkyard with a bunch of big block landyachts in it and will grab those brackets... Are Big Block brackets specific to years? There aren't any issues concerning pulley depth, etc. from one year to the other, are there?

Will RB brackets work on B engines?

Thanks,
-Brad

Quick way to figure out 383 vs 400 is the stamp by distributor. As for brackets, there are different ones, a/c , etc. Add to that thirty years, various part store mess ups....on my power wagons, I take the belts off, straight edge, add shims, and done. I've also had bent brackets, homemade spacers, all fun things to find when fixing.

Okay,
1. You are lucky to have a "yard" where you can pick parts AND parts are available.
2. 440 AND 383 brackets ARE the same when it comes to AC, Pwr steering AND alternator.
So; armed with this info you have a start.

I had to piece together "stuff" for my application on the 70 Bee...
No Hemi came with AC so I had a lot of figuring to do...
PS: Randy at Bouchillions (BPE) helped me with TECH advice.
See pic below:
These are 440/383 brackets.

As this is in a truck, there are different parts. Some stock bb trucks came passenger side inlet water pump, as well as a different power steering placement. If it is a 383 from a truck, it would most likely be from an ugly truckling. The pump placement is different. This really isn't a great place to solve truck issues, your best bet is ramchargercentral.com . Lots more information there.
