Was that a 1970 & up design disaster or did they come out prior to 1970? Was it just a 383 thing or were 440s blessed with them too?

Most OE motors from all brands used them because they were quieter and a lot of gear drives like 300 fords 2.8 fords used fiber cam gears

They actually lasted for a good number of miles if you didn't over heat the engine a lot.....

nylon gears

I saw them in 383,413, and 440 engines, as far back as 64. However, my 68 four barrel charger had steel gears, I believe original, it was 1980.

I have pulled plenty of those nylon disasters (silent chain) out of late 60's engines, and not limited to just MoPar. Back in the 80's I pulled apart a 69 396 and the nylon bits found their way past the oil pick up screen and had packed themselves nicely in the crank oil holes. No spun bearings though. Finding that was one of the great mysteries of engine rebuilding. Phenolic tooth cam gears found their way on engines that used gear drives from the factory. Some inline 6 cylinders, German V6 from the Capri - to name a couple.
