Yes, the only engines that got steel gears also got double rollers.... That would be Hemi & 340... Apparently the engineers felt the higher RPM's were the determining factor of better components...
I know they used plastic toothed gears as early as 63 & I suspect that would be true into the 50's...
I had one in my 1970 440 that came from a cop car. It's the weak link in our engines. The plastic cogs break off and get into the oil system.
I ALWAYS go back with a steel gear!
They did that for noise??
I got to admit, all these years with engines with replaced cam gears (all steel), I can't
say as I've ever noticed any undue noises coming from the timing cover area??
