HAS ANYONE HERE USED A BILLET DISTRIBUTOR FROM 440 SOURCE? I HAVE ONE O MY CAR AND WAS WONDERING HOW THEY COMPARE TO A MALLORY OR MSD OR SIMILAR. ANY INFO OR SUGGESTION ARE APPRECIATED. Sorry, I didn't mean to yell at you, the cap locks were on and I'm not retyping this. Thanks

I used a distributor similar to those.....not sure if it is the same exact one or not. I bought mine on eBay new in the box from the manufacturer for around $60.00. Thought I would try it since I could buy like 4 of them compared to the msd. It was also the same one that a local parts store here used to sell. My buddy who runs the shop at the parts store said they were actually the place that builds the msd ones..... don't know if he knew that for sure but....it worked just great and would buy it again...

gOOD TO KNOW, (sorry, I'm yelling again) I haven't had any issues, but would just like any info on them that was available.

Where's Budnicks, I'm in the mood for a novel.

I used one with no issues but had to switch to the MSD because it wouldn't clear the corner of the cross ram. I wouldn't changed it if it hadn't been for that minor issue. Can't beat the price either.

Yeah I'm paid by the word... sorry I haven't ever used one of those distributors...

I've replaced them before, but I'm going to get something to eat now so I'll have to explain tomorrow why I won't use them again.

Good morning, here is my answer. Last I heard ProComp makes the 440 Source distributor, but that isn't the problem I have with it.

Four years ago I bought a 440 Source distributor to save a few bucks. Then I built a really high performance 500 stroker with a large cam that needed a bunch of initial timing and very little mechanical advance. Well the 440 Source distributor uses metal tangs that you must bend to limit the mechanical advance. By the time you bend the tangs far enough, it warps the plate the advance weights rest on and the weights lock up. The distributor will work fine for a stock type build with a very small cam that doesn't require a lot of initial timing, but for high performance with big cams get something else.

I built a 493 for a gentleman and he provided me with a 440 Source distributor for his engine. After I showed him how it was designed we installed the 440 Source distributor and made a dyno pull. We pulled the distributor and replaced it with a FireCore50 and made a pull. He then pulled out his wallet and said, "How much for the new distributor, the FireCore50?"

Thanks for the info. More knowledge for me.

I use one with the weight plate welded up and no electronics in it. It uses a crank trigger so it's just there to distribute the spark. I would have used a stock part if I had one. I found this on clearance from 440 source for $25. Cap and plug wires fit well, bearings are nice. Wouldn't hesitate to use a stocker in my car. Distributors are an area
where I would spend my money elsewhere. Runnig cars with stockers into the nines w/o issue. My 440 source distributor has been 9.25@147 in my 64.

X2, I ran mine on the street but when I took it to the track I found I needed more timing. That's when I found out about the tabs, bad design for sure. Street use YES, Track use, NOPE

IQ52 was that the one you wrote about over on Mopar Muscle Mag. forum, probably a couple years ago now ?? just curious, sorry no links... see I didn't write a novel...he he ha ha

I used the firecore distributer and wires with great results. Easily adjustable, nice unit.

I use to use the mopar performance distributor but switched to the msd pro billet one. Never looked back

i am using a pro comp and its cap "walks" causing erratic timing. i found a place called RPC in tempe az who sell a msd pro billet sold under the supershops name, 78.00.

Thanks for the lead. How do you know it's an MSD unit?
