Blinded by the Light!

Hi all! I just reinstalled the instrument cluster in my '74 Charger. All new bulbs. And the accessory light is blinding! Am I missing something? It just seems so bright! It turns on when I turn my key on. Does it turn off automatically?

My 71 RR has a red lens there, I beleive its for the brake light. Best picture I could find on my phone.

Yes it should have a dark red lens that says "brake", and should not be on when driving.

Pull up on the emergency brake pedal & the light should go off.
