you guys do know that he hid and ran nitrous on all those cars dont you .??
his son billy admitted it a few yrs back ...
I'm not 100% sure about him running N20, in the NHRA National events
there was always the accusations scuttlebutt, rumors, never fined/or found that I knew of...
He did always hide his intakes, I'm sure when he put his coat/fire jacket
draped over it,
post haste & the 1st thing, just right immediately,
"right after getting out, 1st thing, when after he rolled the car"
that really made a few people, & some people very suspicious too...
but;
not sure
it was ever a N2O deal,
more to protect his 1 off, sheet-metal intake design & split dominators,
he wanted to keep secret too, his combo... (that's my best guess)
but;
I also don't put anything past the guys trying to win, even Glidden
even as much as I respect the guy (Bob anyway)
or him/his family race team, skirting rules that aren't written in ink,
to take any advantage they could, to win...
It's pretty damn hard to be
"that dominant for 2 decades"
if you are not cheating a lil' bit, skirting the "rules"
or at a min. at least attempting too...
He did go thru quite a few 'tear downs' to have the NHRA inspect, his combo
why he was beating the **** out of everyone ?
IIRC Warren Johnson put the $$$ up, IIRC several times
Scott Geoffrion was a former driver of the "Professor's too"
He/They should both know, they did it to him/them too/2
when he/his team was dominant,
with the Olds & Pontiac Chief DREC corporate engines in the 90's
I'm pretty damn sure it was Glidden's/or Ford (or maybe others too)
putting the $$ up for them to be torn down, gone over with a fine tooth comb too...
yep
like the Wayne County MoPars, B1 Wedge P/S era,
RIP (2006) Scott Geoffrion, cool dude, nice guy
& was the 1st guy in NHRA P/S to break the 7.10 sec. barrier 1992-ish,
w/7.099 ET at Maple Grove
& that Wayne Co. team, "allegedly" falsified shop/trailer 'break in & destruction',
to cover it up & hide ****
I do remember NHRA getting on him (Bob Glidden) & taking points away from
"allegedly" they threw out his qualifying prior 2 runs
he had been running unapproved originated race gas, none NHRA approved in qualifying
(not 100% sure about in the actual races/eliminations)
& when it was certainly against the P/S rules at the time, when they called him on it...
(I saw it 1st hand, I was in the line of the scales/weight station),
mine at Sears Point
I'm not sure it was ever wrote up in National Dragster either...
Swept under the rug...
All mentioned were "alleged"
Pro-stock has been know for creative cheaters, all thru the years
"skirting the rules unwritten rules, that had to be changed or clarified"
Grumpy did it, a lot
Warren Johnson did it, when Greg was his crew chief
Glidden's did it
Wayne County Team both guys did it
until the rules were clarified, they all do it...
P/S Guys in the early 70's all did, until a specific rule was put in place...
I'm pretty sure Elite's team is too, (
allegedly Erica no doubt)
I just don't know what (?)
maybe why they fell off at the end of the year, again...
Maybe they were getting close to being exposed (who's to say ?)
IIRC recently "allegedly" Greg Anderson/Jason Line team, before Titan
& with prior KB Racing team
again "allegedly", that I heard thru the grapevine, scuttlebutt
he/they was/were shaving his front tires down (unsafe)
to take nose weight off the cars, better reaction times etc.,
until he/they got caught by NHRA...
Among other tricks to get by tech, to get an edge, remember all the front tires popping ?...
He wasn't the only one either...
It's not uncommon at all, to cheat, especially crew chiefs or car chiefs
Some drivers/maybe even the owners are oblivious to some of it (? maybe)
they aren't '
angles' by any stretch of anyone imaginations...
NHRA is a dog eat dog world, you better be the wolf, not the prey...
How man times has JFR been accused of cheating ?
over the years
especially 16+ years when he was winning championship
one after another 16 times, or his team was, with a break here or there...
Anyone remember the 'green towels' stuff, that was funny as hell
a freaken' '
green shop towel, over the throttle peddle',
inside the car IIRC (to allegedly hide something)
that made people panic & them claim he was up-to no good "
cheater"
Austin Coil (sly guy, prankster too) did it on purpose,
just to throw them all off, they were trying different clutch stuff mostly
used it as a diversion, look here, not there &
they all swallowed that bait, hook line & sinker,
They may have been cheating (I don't know), but it wasn't under that towel...
Or Kenny Bernstein & Dale Armstrong with that "Batmobile F/C"
that was a lesson in rules abuse & if it isn't written down, it's not a rule...
I remember Joe Pisano (uncle Joe, not my real uncle), or just gossip
Jim or Mike Dunn, Al Bush or Al Segrini telling stories, some funny some not so funny...
Some I could & would never tell here...
