I talked to the local body guy here in my small town and asked him how much to finish the body work, which includes replacing both rockers, and patching a 1/4 panel, aligning doors, hood and trunk. Priming, Blocking, Painting and buff n polish. He went to high school with my wife, I like the guy I think he will do me right. BUT he told me 2 week turn around. $2000 Sounds reasonable to me, I know its going to be alot of work.

That seems quick or maybe he is pumping me full of bull butter.

Any opinions or advise would be nice. Ive never spent any money on a project for paing jobs, so im not knowing what to expect. I Think I should get a couple of quotes to compare.

Thanks, Rich

For that kinda price he must like you and/or your wife a LOT! I would beware, get it all down on paper, what you are going to get, cost for the work, and completion date. He could get it done in 2 weeks, but that would be what he would be working on for 2 weeks. Let us know how it comes out.

I thought the price sounded pretty good. This wont be happening till fall when I have some extra cash comming in or when I start getting my VA bennifits.

The boys here will be the first to know for sure!

That's a screaming deal. Make sure you see a bunch of his work so you have an idea of what his work looks like.

That's a good deal. It cost me $2600 to have the rockers and quarters on my edsel repaired. And that's without any painting (just priming).

As long as it's NOT just slapping on a Bucket of Bondo everywhere, he does a decent job with the body work & cutting out & welding in the panel replacements, no runs, sags or a bunch of orange peel in the paint, nowadays a decent paint Job for $2000, is a smoken' deal too... that's only $25 an/hr, if it was labor only, not including materials, most shop rates begin at $50+ an/hr, on the lower end of the scale.... I use to, be able to do my own race cars in about 1-2 weeks, but they weren't show quality either, usually a bunch of fiberglass replacement parts, lots of long blocking & prep mostly, usually what I would consider "5-fters" too, they looked good from the stands thou..LOL... What Color will it be painted ??... I wouldn't suspect that's NOT completely disassembling the car & doing a full paint job, engine bay, door jams, interior panels, trunk, under hood, chassis/underside etc., with out complete disassembly, that probably could be done in a short time frame... IMHFO 2 weeks is a really tight schedule, if he can pull that off, a light color doesn't show flaws anywhere near as bad as dark colors do, but usually it takes that much time, just to get parts & all the paint supplies, unless they are readily available &/or unless the car is pretty straight already, the patch panel parts & paint supplies are already supplied to him etc... Good luck

He is going to do the door jambs under the hood and trunk, but NOT the engine compartment or inside the trunk. Im guessing the hood will have to be removed to get it clean underneath its nasty for sure. I think 2 weeks is a tall order for him, I would have liked to hear 4 week turn around but maybe he isnt that busy. Its only a town of 4400 people.

Man that's cheap..real cheap. I'd be really weary of that.. Primer/paint/clear and consumables can easily rack up to a grand. Replacing the rockers is not an easy task and it's very time consuming. I can't imagine if you took into account replacing rockers, quarter repairs, body, fill, sanding, spraying, blocking, spraying, sanding..ect...ect...then buffing out on top of that, how that could possibly come out to a good job @2K. That is unless the guy completely looses his ***. I agree with Eric, see some prior work. Even then, IMO..somethings off. Good luck.

Christ all mighty thats cheap, If I went to the local guy here he would tell me $10-15k lol better get that 2k in writing and unless he has magic elves good luck with the 2 weeks too :pixie:

Even had one rod shop tell me unless they do the whole car he wouldn't do the body and paint! lol Everyone out here thinks cuz it's a classic it has to cost a million.

My car cost me 5k plus I paid for the metal. another 1,500.00. that was a smoking deal, but he also told me he would be done in 90 days. 10 months later I got the car back after I had to talk to his boss he was working for during the day.

2K including metal work and paint. I would go look at his other work, and ask what type paint he is using. Will it be Single stage vs two stage. Do not pay up front. unless your best buddies and trust him with your life, I would be very weery. depending on what color your going with will tell you how good the body has to be prior to paint.

MACCO charges about the same thing minus the metal work and I have heard they do a decent job.

You can bet it won't be $2000 OR 2 weeks. I'm sure the guy has good intentions and probably does good work. In a town that small there are no secrets. Be prepared for at least 50%-75% more and equally longer if your lucky. The shop that is doing my car is close to work; I make a point of stopping by EVERY DAY to check on progress and I gave him a generous drop dead date (1st week of July) so he has a harder time trying to nickel and dime me. (or should I say $50 and $100 me) Good luck with your project!!

004 (800x600).jpgIts possible if he uses the paint materials that summit sells or the Kirker brand. The guy that did my GTX worked for $15 per hour but i supplied the shop and materials and the car came out very nice so it can be done cheap and come out nice.I used the omni brand.

If those numbers end up right and it's quality work he could probably get a lot of work from this forum. I'd be wary though.

my 2cents- if it sounds like no 1 thinks it can be done is because we have been there done that good luck and go for it the guy may do right by you let us know this time next year ENJOY THAT MOPAR

Get what you pay for when it comes to Paint and Body

Wow! I'm 1300 into media blasting, 2700 into metal repair and exterior priming, my painter is going to charge me 5gs plus paint (650.00 x2 gallons plus 400.00 in good clear), give or take 12gs. Waaaaaay more than I wanted to spend, but I had to get the 1/2 thick bondo off and start fresh. I wish u the best with that estimate, be wary.

So if its done inexpensivly it must be no good huh?

I guess part of it is where you live. Around here you won't find anyone doing body work for $15.00/hr. And if you did, it probably is a hack job. I'm doing all the body work including paint on my 68. Paint supplies were well north of $1,500.00, but I used PPG paint.
